Waste Management

Management of municipal solid waste in the area of interest is realized based on the Regional Planning for Solid Waste Management (known as PESDA) in Central Macedonia. PESDA depicts the current situation in the waste sector and constitutes a framework of initiatives and interventions, setting targets and timetables for the installation and configuration of Organised Waste Management Facilities. The authorized PESDA of the Region of Central Macedonia is harmonized with EU directives 94/62/EC and 99/31/EC and the Greek law.

The FODSA (Solid Waste Management Bodies) are the competent bodies of the local government, particularly responsible for issues and matters relating to the operation, activities and pricing, concerning the specification and implementation of the objectives and actions of the PESDA on temporary storage, transportation, processing, re-use and final disposal of solid waste. The prefecture of Chalkidiki has five FODSA and our project in particular, is the responsibility of FODSA of Polygyros. The purpose of this body is the management and operation of Polygyros landfill, providing advisory services to the municipalities involved as well as a number of other responsibilities including environmental studies programs and initiatives.

Overall, three sanitary landfills are in operation in Chalkidiki, while 2 others are expected to be constructed. Also there are 2 operational Waste Transfer Stations (WTS).

Overall, for the entire Chalkidiki, it is calculated that the amounts of MSW in all municipalities is around 92.000 tn, while the average daily per capita generation of MSW is around 0,7-1,2 kg / person / day.

In addition, Polygyros has applied packaging recycling under a contract with the municipality of Thessaloniki who has provided recycling bins for paper and packaging. Also, the town has launched a recycling program for electrical and electronic devices. The old appliances are collected in a special container, which is located in the landfill of Polygyros.
