Progress of the Unit and the Project

The last few months, the LIFE+ reclaim Team has been kept busy with many different actions of the project. First of all, the Pilot Demonstration Unit has concluded its operation. The necessary rehabilitation works in the Polygyros Landfill were realised: closing of the mining pit with fresh waste, covering with soil material, moving the machinery, etc. The results from the PDU have been thoroughly documented and processed for the relevant Technical studies of the project. A short summary of the actual works was also presented at the ATHENS 2015 International Landfill Mining Conference of September.

 

More studies are also following on the socio-economic impact of the LIFE+ reclaim project and the value of Landfill Mining which can be used as a reference for future projects. Also, the Team is currently helding meetings and contacts with public organisations, relevant bodies and businesses for the collection of feedback about the elaboration of a National Action Plan on Landfill Mining as an alternative method of solid waste and landfill management.

 

 

International Athens Conference: a review

The ATHENS 2015 International Landfill Mining Conference was held on the 24th and 25th of September 2015, providing a rich programme with 26 international and speakers, experts in the fields of mining and waste management. It was a big success, attended by more than 200 people from the academic community, the private sector and the public authorities. Also, the Conference had a great impact on the media.

 

Furthermore, we were very pleased to get a chance to present the LIFE+ reclaim project progress and gather valuable feedback both for the project and the Conference and we confirmed that there is great interest in Greece around the subject of Landfill Mining.
